30th May – Tina May with Dave Gordon, Paul Cavaciuti & Paul Jefferies – £10.00

Tina May must surely rank as one of the UK’s finest female Jazz vocalists? Her work throughout the years in the UK and France has seen her perform with the very highest order of rhythm sections, composers and instrumentalists. She has that rare commodity in a jazz vocalist – poise – and the ability to truly carry you with her on whatever musical journey she embarks. Tina’s instrument is honed to near perfection, silken smooth but with edge and dynamics that grasp attention and maintains momentum to the very end. Her band today comprise two of the most respected musicians there are – Dave Gordon, a superb jazz pianist whose utter intensity beguiles the listener and drummer of international repute – Paul Cavaciuti – a kit man who really engages with both fellow musicians on the stage and his audience. Paul Jefferies roots the package down on double bass for an evening of what promises to be top quartet jazz in our unique and much loved venue. Sadly the last before major works are carried out to the Church during June, July and August.

APRIL CONCERT DETAILS April 16, 2012

25th April 2012 – Tantrum (feat. Tommaso Starace) – £10.00

Born out of frustration? Not really, just a name that hints at the energy created by this rather wonderful trio of sax (Tommaso Starace), double bass (Paul Jefferies) and drums (Frank Hockney). This jazz trio sets out firstly to entertain, but this line-up also enables the true sound and nature of each instrument to shine, providing melody and outlining harmony in a way that renders its performances accessible to every ear, whether experienced jazz listener or newbie.

Tommaso Starace is no stranger to Oxford – he’s performed to critical acclaim at the Spin jazz club, Oxford’s Jazz Festival and with his own band at our very own Jazz Elite concerts club. He has a muscular, driving energy and plays with utter conviction.

The much loved Frank Hockney brings pin-point accuracy and fearsome power to the trio, pushing dynamics to a new level and playfully interacting with the other two soloists – a drummers drummer with a much applauded musicality and great sense of humour.

Paul Jefferies kicked off the idea of this ‘chordless’ trio and he gets ample opportunity to come to the fore with solos and compositions.

Another gem of a gig – hope you can make it!

30th Nov – Nicolas Meier in Concert With Pete Oxley, Paul Jefferies & Russ Morgan

www.meiergroup.com

Nicolas studied classical guitar under Francis Coletta at the Conservatoire Fribourg and subsequently jazz at the world famous Berklee College. He has a formidable reputation for his work with his own group touring here and throughout Europe with the likes of Elvin Jones, Brad Meldau and Trilok Gurtu. Nicolas draws on a multitude of influences including Jazz, Flamenco, Latin and Middle Eastern music – all of which are represented in his music and his recordings for the hi-fi record company NAIM. Nick’s wife and muse, Songul, is Turkish and he is constantly being inspired by the textures melodies and rhythms of Turkey, that are often to be heard in his work.

Pete Oxley needs little introduction to the folk of Oxford, being not only a very fine composer and guitarist, but also one half of the team that established the award winning SPIN jazz club over 15 years ago.

Drummer Russ Morgan should not be mistaken for the famed trombonist and arranger from the big-band era. This Mr Morgan principal has featured stints alongside players such as saxophonist Kevin Flanagan, pianist Chris Ingham, guitarist Pete Oxley, and reed player Mark Lockheart.

Special CLASSICAL Concert – Saturday 12th Nvember November 7, 2011

MARIA CAMAHORT ENSEMBLE present:

SPANISH COMPOSERS & THE INFLUENCE OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC IN THEIR REPERTOIRE (TICKETS £12.00)

Something different this month! Aside from bringing  the stunning Nicolas Meier with Pete Oxley and friends to St Michael at the North Gate, we are delighted to be holding a classical music concert featuring Spanish classical gutarist Maria Camahort (WWW.MARIACAMAHORT.COM). As part of her European tour, Maria and her colleagues – Violeta Garcia (violin and voice), Laura Ruhi (soprano), Oscar Alabau (Cello), Jon Desbruslais (percussion) – present a concert exploring the works of Spanish classical composers and the way in which traditional music has inspired these and other musicians; adapted and arranged by Classical guitarist Maria Camahort with ensemble.

Synopsis:

Traditional music in Spain has always been an important source of inspiration for Spanish composers. More intensely since the end of 19th century -and especially from the 20th as a consequence of the Musical Nationalism-, Spanish composers were inspired by the melodies, rhythms, harmonies and instruments from the Spanish traditional music.

The guitar, as the predominant instrument of the Spanish folklore, was one of the main sources of inspiration for some of these composers. The influence of traditional music and the idiomatic language of the guitar on their compositions is more than remarkable. This was one of the causes of the revival that the Guitar repertoire experienced during the 20th century.

The list of composers that could be included in this concert is extensive, and the musical examples that could be found are extremely numerous. Albéniz and his Suite Iberia; Granados and his Goyescas and Tonadillas; Mompou, his Cançons i Dances and his Suite Compostelana, Falla and almost all of his compositions…

Furthermore, we will see that nowadays composers frequently take inspiration from traditional music, so on the guitar. This is the case, to name a few, of Joaquin Rodrigo, Rodolfo Halffter, Salvador Brotons, Feliu Gasull, Joan Albert Amargos, Manuel Garcia Morante…

The performance, we will comprise pieces arranged for small ensemble as follows:

- F. Mompou, Suite Compostelana  and Cançons i Dances:

- Feliu Gasull:  Suite per cello i guitarra and Tres Quarts:

- Manuel de Falla: Homenaje Pour le Tombeau de Claude Debussy, and Seis Canciones Populares Españolas.
